Welcome to the 2007-2008 school year.  I am extremely pleased to welcome students and parents to Westview Middle School.  Your educational experience will be meaningful and enjoyable for you.  Your teachers, counselors, administrators and I will work closely with you toward our common goal of providing you with a high quality education. We are hopeful that you will gain valuable knowledge this school year.

We encourage all parents/guardians to participate through our Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) and our Educational Excellence School Advisory Council (EESAC).  Please take the time to participate in your child’s education through these groups in making this a wonderful educational experience for your child/our students.

We expect the best effort and behavior from students at Westview Middle School because you are the best.  Please feel comfortable in asking the teachers, counselors and administrative staff for whatever you feel you need.

And we are looking forward to seeing and meeting each and every one of you.

Welcome back!!!

I’m looking forward to this new school year. My goals include assisting our principal on her mission to improve our student’s performance by closing the achievement gap through a positive attitude, improving student attendance, and the implementation of data based instruction. I’m also excited about meeting Westview families through parental involvement opportunities such as PTSA, EESAC, ESOL Parent Seminars, and The Parent Academy Programs. See you there. Finally, it will be my pleasure to be the 8th grade Assistant Principal and seeing your children successfully navigate an important phase in their education.

Please remember, my office door is always open to parents and students.

Uniform Policy

Westview Middle School is a Mandatory Uniform School.  Students are expected to come to school with proper attention having been given to personal cleanliness, grooming and neatness.  Students should are not allowed to wear clothing which would constitute a distraction from learning, be a safety or health hazard, create a distraction or disruption of normal school life, or be offensive to individuals or groups.  Our uniform colors are navy, white, khaki, and gold.  Uniforms are to be worn Monday through Friday.

Financial Obligations:

All financial obligations incurred, i.e., school fees, textbook loss or damage, club activities, overdue or lost library books must be paid in the school’s treasurer’s office.

Homework:

Homework is an essential element in the academic growth of each student.  It provides the student with an opportunity to demonstrate the ability to organize and follow through independently on assigned tasks.  It affords the parent the chance to see the way each child approaches school work and gives the parents insight into the achievement, expectations, and perhaps, frustrations of the learner.  Most homework is a continuation of activities begun in class.  Some type of homework is assigned to students each day.

Student’s Responsibilities for Completing Homework

1.                  Complete assigned homework as directed.

2.                  Return homework to the teacher by the designated time.

3.                  Submit homework assignments which reflect careful attention to detail and quality of work.

4.                  Devote a minimum of 30 minutes each day to Reading as an additional part of the homework assignment.

NOTE:  Students can receive additional help through the Dial-A-Teacher Program at (305)995-1600, Monday through Thursday, from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM.

Parents’/Legal Guardians’ Responsibilities

Parents/legal guardians are responsible for providing assistance to their child in completing homework. There is so much that parents/legal guardians can do to promote good study habits.

1.                  Provide an environment conducive to studying.

2.                  Provide continued interest and concern for the child’s successful performance in school.

3.                  Encourage and support the child in his/her completion of homework assigned.

4.                  Indicate an interest in assignments and assist, if possible, when requested by the child.  This is not to include performing the work for the child.

5.                  Support the school in regard to the child being assigned homework.  Requesting assignments for the child when short term absences are involved.

6.                  Assure that the child reads when specific homework assignments are not given or when they are completed before the specified time period for homework is over.

Make-up Assignments:

Students are responsible for the content of all class work.  All students who have been absent due to an excused (permissible) reason shall, upon return to school, request make-up assignments.  It should be remembered that all class-work, due to the nature of instruction, is not readily subject to make up work; for instance, the make-up assignments may be different if the class participated in an oral discussion for a grade on that given day.  A student who does not make up all assignments will receive a lower grade than if he/she had been present in class and completed all assignments.

Textbooks:

The State of Florida furnishes all basic textbooks for loan by the students.  Students are responsible for all textbooks, library books and materials issued to them during the school year.  Books not returned to the school and those damaged must be paid for by the student.

Philosophy

The Westview Middle School Media Center provides a setting where students develop skills they will need as adults to locate, analyze, evaluate, interpret, and communicate information and ideas in an information-rich world. Students are encouraged to realize their potential as informed citizens who think critically and solve problems, to observe rights and responsibilities relating to the generation and flow of information and ideas, and to appreciate the value of literature in an educated society.

Student Services:

Westview Middle School provides an organized Student Services program for all students.  This program assists students in developing their potential by creating an environment and offering support to grow academically, socially, and emotionally.  Our programs have a positive impact to enable all students to make self-directed, realistic, and responsible decisions affecting their lives.  Our student services team is looking forward to working with our students and parents to create an atmosphere which supports the students’ positive growth and development.
